This gene belongs to the 5-hydroxytryptamine receptor subfamily and encodes a G protein-coupled receptor for serotonin. Numerous pathological disorders and physiological processes have been linked to serotonin. Mice with this gene inactivated exhibit behaviors that are consistent with a heightened stress and anxiety response. Menstrual cycle-dependent periodic fevers have been linked to mutations in the gene's promoter.
