Background

Interferon alpha inducible protein 27 (IFI27, also known as ISG12A) is a small hydrophobic interferon-stimulated protein encoded by the IFI27 gene and associated primarily with intracellular membrane compartments, including mitochondria. Distinct from cell-surface receptors, IFI27 lacks a characterized extracellular ligand-binding ectodomain and does not function as a plasma-membrane receptor. It is strongly induced by type I interferon and has been studied as an intracellular membrane-associated effector in interferon-responsive cells. Reported functions are context dependent and include effects on mitochondrial stress and apoptosis-related responses in some model systems. Other studies have linked IFI27 to antiviral responses through intracellular mechanisms, without establishing a general cell-surface signaling role. Accordingly, IFI27 research is better centered on interferon-induced expression, intracellular localization, and associated stress or antiviral phenotypes.

Variants of the IFI27 gene may alter protein expression or intracellular function and correlate with changes in interferon-responsive cellular phenotypes. Shifts in IFI27 expression levels commonly align with cellular interferon-exposure status, rendering it a suitable research subject for interferon-inducible membrane-associated protein and cellular response analysis. IFI27 has been reported at mitochondrial and other intracellular membrane compartments, and its subcellular distribution can vary with experimental context; these observations do not support a defined extracellular partner-binding or plasma-membrane signal-transduction mechanism. Altered IFI27 expression may influence intracellular stress, apoptosis-related, or antiviral phenotypes, supporting its value for basic interferon-response studies.

IFI27 Protein Function: Core Roles in Interferon-Induced Intracellular Responses

The biological functions of IFI27 are context dependent and are studied mainly in relation to interferon-induced expression, intracellular membrane association, and downstream cellular responses:

  • Interferon-Induced Expression: IFI27 is strongly inducible by type I interferons and can be used to examine changes in interferon-stimulated cellular states.
  • Cellular Response Regulation: Altered IFI27 expression has been associated with stress- and apoptosis-related phenotypes in several model systems, although effects depend on cellular context.
  • Intracellular Membrane Association: IFI27 is a small hydrophobic protein reported at mitochondrial and other intracellular membrane compartments rather than as a cell-surface receptor.
  • Antiviral Research Relevance: IFI27 has been linked to antiviral activity through intracellular mechanisms in several experimental systems.
  • Research Model Relevance: Sequence variants or altered IFI27 expression may shift interferon-responsive phenotypes within laboratory research systems.

IFI27 Protein Product

Creative Biolabs offers purified IFI27 protein samples produced under unified preparation workflows, including full-length IFI27 constructs and selected sequence variants. Full-length constructs suit research focused on interferon-induced protein behavior, intracellular membrane association, and related biochemical studies. All batches receive uniform quality screening. Functional observation should be designed according to the intended assay and relevant intracellular membrane context. Consistent structural features are preserved across batches to support comparative laboratory analysis across separate test groups. Full-length IFI27 samples can support comparative studies of IFI27-related intracellular membrane processes without implying extracellular ligand-binding activity.
