The N-terminal domain, DNA-binding domain, and androgen-binding domain are the three primary functional domains of the androgen receptor protein, which is encoded by the more than 90 kb long androgen receptor gene. The protein acts as a transcription factor that is triggered by steroids and hormones. The receptor separates from supporting proteins after binding the hormone ligand, moves into the nucleus, dimerizes, and then activates transcription of androgen-responsive genes. The N-terminal transactivation domain of this gene's protein is encoded by two polymorphic trinucleotide repeat segments that code for polyglutamine and polyglycine tracts.
