This gene encodes the endothelin-1 receptor, a peptide that contributes to powerful and protracted vasoconstriction. Guanine-nucleotide-binding (G) proteins connect with this receptor, and this coupling activates the phosphatidylinositol-calcium second messenger system. Resistance to migraine headaches has been connected to polymorphisms in this gene. The endothelinA receptor (ETA receptor) is a G-protein-coupled receptor that is a part of the endothelin receptor group, which also includes ETB. They are largely found in the vascular smooth muscle, where they contribute to cell growth and vasoconstriction.
