Chickens are evolutionarily distant from mammals (separated by over 300 million years). This phylogenetic distance means that many human proteins or therapeutic antibodies that are highly conserved—and thus weakly immunogenic in mice or rabbits—are recognized as "foreign" by the chicken immune system. This leads to the production of high-affinity Chicken Anti-Idiotypic Antibodies against epitopes that mammalian systems might ignore.

Chicken anti-idiotypic antibody production is non-invasive and highly efficient. A single immunized hen can produce significant quantities of IgY within the yolk of its eggs.
