Genitourinary cancers are cancers that affect the reproductive organs and the urinary system. The genitourinary tract traditionally includes the kidneys, the bladder, the tubes that collect and drain urine from the kidneys and drain it into the bladder (the ureters), the tube that drains urine from the bladder to the outside (the urethra), and specifically in men, the testicles and the prostate. The prostate is an accessory sex gland necessary for reproduction. Cancers that develop on the penis or in the adrenal glands are also classified as genitourinary cancers.

Prostate Cancer

The prostate gland is located in a man’s pelvis underneath the bladder, where it supports the reproductive process. Prostate cancer originates in the cells of the prostate, which is a small gland in the male reproductive system that produces seminal fluid. The prostate gland is located below the bladder in front of the rectum and surrounds the upper part of the urethra. Prostate cancer begins to develop in the glandular cells of the prostate, which is the most common type and is called the adenocarcinoma of the prostate.

Testicular Cancer

Testicles have two functions in men. One is to produce sperm, permitting reproduction, and the other is to make testosterone. The most common form of testicular cancer begins in germ cells located in the testicles called germ cell tumors. Nearly 90% of all testicular cancer is attributed to germ cell tumors. Testicular cancer is very rare before puberty and after the age of 65. There are five different subtypes of testicular cancer and treatments almost always involve removing the impacted testicle surgically. Additional treatments with chemotherapy or sometimes radiotherapy can have the potential to cure even advanced cases that have spread in the body. For this disease, a multidisciplinary approach is very important to achieve the highest chance of success.

Penile Cancer

Penile cancer starts in the penis, which is part of the male reproductive and urinary system. The most common form of penile cancer is called squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the penis, which arises in the skin and/or head of the penis. Approximately 95% of all penile cancer is attributed to penile cancer. Rare types of penile cancer can also develop such as adenocarcinoma, melanoma and basal cell carcinoma (BCC).

Kidney Cancer

The kidneys are located on either side of the spine and are responsible for filtering water and waste products from the blood to make urine. The kidneys help remove waste products from the body and also help control blood formation and fluid balances in the body. The most common type of kidney cancers is called renal cell carcinoma, which happens in cells that line the tubules. Rare types of kidney cancer can also develop such as renal sarcoma and primary renal lymphoma.

Bladder Cancer

The bladder is part of the urinary system. Bladder cancer occurs in cells of the urothelium, which is a layer that lines the insides of the ureter, bladder, urethra, and parts of the kidneys. The most common form of bladder cancer is called urothelial carcinoma, which makes up roughly 90% of total bladder cancer. When the cancer is only in the urothelium, it is called non-invasive bladder cancer. If the cancer spreads into the connective tissue or muscle in the wall of the bladder, it is called invasive bladder cancer. Most cancers are found in the bladder, where the urine has the longest contact with the lining urothelial cells. Most of these cancers can result in bleeding into the urine. A majority of bladder cancers are found early before they invade deeply or metastasize.
