Laryngeal Cancer

Laryngeal cancer is a type of cancer arising from the skin of laryngeal, mostly squamous cell carcinoma. Cancer can develop in any part of the larynx. The larynx is divided into three anatomical regions: the glottis (true vocal cords, anterior and posterior commissures); supraglottis (epiglottis, arytenoids, aryepigottic folds and false ropes); and subglottis. Most laryngeal cancers originate from the glottis while supraglottic cancer and subglottic tumor are less common. The cure rate is affected by the location of the tumor. Laryngeal cancer may spread by extending directly to neighboring structures, by translocation to regional cervical lymph nodes, or further by blood stream. The symptoms of laryngeal cancer depend on the size and location of the tumor. Symptoms may include persistent cough, hoarseness or other voice changes, stridor, difficulty swallowing and a sore throat. Therapeutic effects may include postoperative appearance changes, difficulty swallowing or loss of voice, which may require learning different ways of speaking.

Preventive HPV Vaccines for Laryngeal Cancer

Smoking still remains the most common cause of laryngeal cancer but the link between laryngeal cancer and HPV is an area of ongoing medical research. There is growing evidence that HPV plays a role in some types of laryngeal cancer. There are many types of HPV that live on the body and only a small number of types cause problems by turning cells from normal to abnormal. More than 40 types of HPV infect the genital areas of men and women, and these types also infect the lining of the mouth and throat. Nearly 90% of HPV-related oral and laryngeal cancer are caused by HPV type 16, while HPV types 18, 33 and 35 can also cause oral cancer. It is possible that HPV vaccines might also prevent laryngeal cancer since the vaccines prevent an initial infection with same HPV types that can cause some laryngeal cancers.
