Introduction of Monkeypox Virus (MPXV)

Monkeypox is a disease in humans and many other animals caused by monkeypox virus infection. Monkeypox virus (MPXV), which is double-stranded DNA virus, belongs to the Orthopoxvirus genus within family Poxviridae. In the Congo Basin (Central African) clade of monkeypox, the risk of death (if not treated) reported is as high as 10%. Smallpox vaccines can prevent infection with 85% effectiveness. Jynneos, a monkeypox vaccine, was approved for the treatment of adults in USA. The current standard procedure is using tecovirimat, an antiviral drug, which aims to treat virus infections such as smallpox and Monkeypox and has been approved in the United States and European Union.
