Introduction
Streptococcus Pneumoniae is a Gram-positive bacterium with alpha/beta-hemolytic and facultative anaerobic characteristics which is usually nonmotile diplococci and do not form spores. Streptococcus Pneumoniae lives asymptomatically in healthy carriers typically colonizing the respiratory tract, sinuses, and nasal cavity. Generally, there is a polysaccharide capsule in Streptococcus Pneumoniae that acts as a virulence factor for the organism. So far, already has more than 90 different serotypes are discovered and these types differ in virulence, prevalence, and extent of drug resistance. Its route of transmission is through the direct person-to-person contact via respiratory droplets and by autoinoculation in persons carrying the bacteria in their upper respiratory tracts.
Alternative Names
