Vaccines for Feline Panleukopenia Virus

Feline Panleukopenia (FPL), caused by Feline panleukopenia virus (FPV), is a serious disease of cats that can be prevented by vaccination. Kittens are often vaccinated during the first few months of life. To date, maternally derived antibodies (MDA) can interfere with vaccination and inhibit the development of active immunity. Therefore, it is very necessary to develop a new vaccine against FPL.

Background of Feline Panleukopenia Virus

Vaccines for Feline Panleukopenia– Creative Biolabs

Feline panleukopenia virus (FPV), belonging to the genus Parvovirus of the virus family Parvoviridae, is a small, non-enveloped single-stranded DNA virus that infects domestic cats and other Felidae as well as species of the families Mustelidae, Procyonidae, and Viverridae (including raccoons, ring-tailed cats, foxes, and minks). The virus is transmitted through the fecal-oral route, initially replicates in tissues of the oropharynx, and then distributed to almost all tissues by cell-free viremia. The genome of FPV is a single-stranded DNA molecule that requires split S-phase cells to replicate, so viral growth is restricted to mitotically active tissues. All "autonomous" parvoviruses require cellular DNA polymerases that synthesize complementary DNA strands and this is the first step in viral DNA replication and a prerequisite for transcription.

The virus causes cat panleukopenia, a disease characterized by a severe reduction in circulating white blood cell counts and enteritis with degeneration of the intestinal villi. The FPV infection is highly contagious and is associated with high mortality and morbidity, as very high concentrations of virus are shed from infected animals. Because of the serious consequences of an infection and the ubiquity of the virus, vaccination is recommended for every cat.

Vaccines for Feline Panleukopenia Virus

  • Inactivated vaccines

Inactivated FPV vaccines have been developed at Creative Biolabs due to their good safety. Such vaccine can be administered by injection and provides solid immunity to the disease. A single dose of inactivated FPV vaccine can rapidly induce a good antibody response in naive cats.

  • Modified-live virus vaccines

Vaccines against FPL are generally based on avirulent, replication competent virus strains (modified live vaccines, MLV). Successful vaccination induces virus-neutralizing antibodies that provide protection against clinical FPL. They can be used to monitor the immunological status of an animal. In kittens lacking maternal antibodies, vaccination with MLV leads to seroconversion with high and long-lasting antibody titers.

  • Combined vaccines

Feline parvovirus (FPV), feline herpesvirus (FHV), and feline calicivirus (FCV) all cause major infectious diseases in cats. Because FPV, FCV, and FHV infections are very prevalent, easily transmitted and/or cause serious illness, vaccination of all cats was recommended by the Advisory Board on Cat Diseases. The combination vaccine against these diseases is a non-adjuvant vaccine consisting of a freeze-dried pellet containing FHV (live FHV vaccine strain), FCV antigens (inactivated FCV strain), Chlamydophila felis (live strain) and FPV (live FPV vaccine strain), reconstituted with a diluent containing the recombinant canarypox virus vCP97 expressing protective immunogens of feline leukaemia virus (FeLV).

With advanced vaccine development platforms and professional teams, Creative Biolabs has developed several safe and effective vaccines against cat panleukopenia. If you have any needs in this regard, please contact us as soon as possible.
