Organ transplantation is the treatment of choice for patients with end-stage organ failure, thereby increasing patient survival and improving quality of life. However, transplantation of cells, tissues, and organs from one individual to another can incite the production of antibodies specific for foreign antigens, which may cause adverse allograft rejection and even early graft loss. During the past years, many antibody-based immunosuppressive drugs, such as antiinterleukin 2 receptor antibodies, have been developed to suppress the immune response against the transplanted tissue. The immunosuppressive effect of these polyclonal antibodies is mediated mainly through interacting with a variety of surface markers (e.g. CD45, CD3, CD4) on the lymphocytes. For example, OKT3 is a murine monoclonal antibody against the CD3 complex of molecules on the surface of T lymphocytes.
