HighlightsThe monocarboxylate transporters (MCTs) belong to the solute carrier (SLC) transporter superfamily and are encoded by the members of the SLC16 gene family. They play essential roles in mediating the absorption and distribution of monocarboxylic compounds across plasma membranes as well as the transport of some drugs across the plasma membrane. Based on sequence homology, the MCT family comprises 14 members. Studies have shown that all members of the MCTs family have 12- transmembrane helices (TMs) with intracellular C- and N-termini and a large cytosolic loop between TMs 6 and 7. What’s more, it has been reported that MCTs are involved in the maintenance of metabolic homeostasis in response to - possibly rapidly - changing demands owing to their importance in shuttling metabolites.
