What are PC/bile Salt Mixed Micelles?

PC/bile salt mixed micelles, namely phosphatidylcholines/bile salt mixed micelles, are s class of mixed micelles generated from a dislike portion of a lecithin bilayer phosphatidylcholines and are surrounded on its perimeter by bile salt molecules. Phosphatidylcholines, also referred to as lecithins, are essentially phospholipids that incorporate choline as a headgroup, which are the most abundant phospholipids and major components of biological membranes in animals. Bile salts are formed by steroid acids in the bile, together with taurine or glycine in the liver, and is conjugated with the sodium and potassium salts, which are soluble amphiphiles with unique molecular structures. Bile salt/ PC mixed micelles can also be named as bile salt/ lecithins mixed micelles, which have been developed as drug delivery systems with better solubilizing capacity and physiological compatibility.

PC/bile Salt Mixed Micelles Work as Drug Carriers

Micelles formed by phosphatidylcholine or lecithin alone are unstable since that the bulky hydrophobic tails of the lipid inhibit its solubility in water. More water-soluble bile salts can intercalate into lecithin micelles and stabilize these structures. Correspondingly, solubility and stability of the mixed system are remarkably enhanced. The self-assembling PC/bile salt mixed micelles can be short, rod-shaped micelles and long, flexible worm-like structures, and are stable in both aqueous systems and nonpolar organic solvents. PC/bile salt mixed micelles are good carriers for those poorly soluble molecules, such as fat-soluble vitamins, since they have the ability to increase the solubility of some insoluble molecules with great biological importance such as phospholipids and monoglycerides. This mixed system is of great usage as transdermal carriers of pharmaceutical molecules for drug release in a controlled manner.
