Nanoemulsion

Background of Nanoemulsion

Nanoemulsions are a colloidal particulate system with droplet sizes on the order of 100 nm acting as carriers of drug molecules. They are kinetically stable liquid-in-liquid dispersions. A typical nanoemulsion contains oil, water and an emulsifier. The preparation methods of nanoemulsion include two methods which are high-energy emulsification and low-energy emulsification. The former method includes high-energy stirring, ultrasonic emulsification, high-pressure homogenization, microfluidization and membrane emulsification. The latter method includes phase inversion temperature, emulsion inversion point and spontaneous emulsification. The combined method is possible to prepare reverse nanoemulsion in a highly viscous system which includes the high-energy and low-energy emulsification. The small size of nanoemulsion leads to useful properties such as high surface area per unit volume, robust stability, optically transparent appearance and tunable rheology. Therefore, nanoemulsions are finding application in various fields such as drug delivery, food, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and material synthesis.

Nanoemulsions in Drug Delivery

There are many forms of nanoemulsions for use in drug delivery, such as topical, ocular, intravenous, internasal and oral delivery. All these applications leverage the lyphophilic nature of nanoemulsions to solvate water-insoluble drugs. Moreover, in order to easily deliver drug to patient, nanoemulsions can exert its excellent ability of tunable charge and rheology to form an aqueous solutions. Nanoemulsion is a translucent system compare to ordinary emulsion or some time microemulsion. It has been demonstrated that with the help of nanoemulsion as a delivery system retention time of a drug in the body can be increased, so low amount of drug is required for the therapeutic action. Past studies showed the utilization of nanoemulsion technology can enhance the bioavailability of lipophilic drug. Nanoemulsion has become a very attractive formulation for the delivery of pharmaceuticals.
