Liposomes are spherical vesicles synthesized from cholesterol, non-toxic surfactants, sphingolipids, glycolipids, long-chain fatty acids and even membrane proteins. Introduction to Functional Liposomes

Liposome is a promising nanocarrier for drug delivery due to its biocompatibility and drug encapsulation ability. As far as conventional liposomes are concerned, there are some unresolved problems in their applications: low targeting, low stability in vivo, easy to be destroyed by various hydrolases in vivo or removed from circulation by the reticuloendothelial system (RES). In order to solve these problems, liposomes are often modified to make up for their shortcomings or to enable/enhance certain functional advantages in applications. This modification strategy can be easily functionalized by introducing functional materials (such as stimulus-responsive materials) to increase the application potential of liposomes. Based on their composition, liposomes can be divided into conventional liposomes, long-circulating liposomes, cationic liposomes, stimulating-responsive liposomes, immunoliposomes, and so on.
