Subtilosomes

Credited to suitable water-oil amphipathy and superiorities, liposomes, as novel lipid-based drug delivery systems, perform better in many aspects like reduced toxicity and adverse effects, enhanced bioavailability and biocompatibility. Creative Biolabs is a world-leading services provider in offering novel subtilosomes formulations and custom services with different properties to both academic and industrial clients.

What are Subtilosomes?

Subtilosomes are liposomes made from phospholipids separated from Bacillus subtilis (B. subtilis), a Gram-positive, catalase-positive bacterium. As a novel potential carrier system used in drug delivery, subtilosomes can be used for the transportation of various metabolically important substances. There are four phospholipids have been isolated and identified from B. subtilis, phosphatidylethanolamine, lysylphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, and polyglycerol phospholipid, probably cardiolipin, all of which are lipids with better fusogenic properties. Liposomes prepared from these phospholipids, namely subtilosomes, are good carrier candidates for antigens and molecules, especially for those unable to cross the plasma membrane.

Drug Delivery Mechanisms of Subtilosomes System

The drug delivery mechanisms of subtilosomes are similar to escheriosomes, another liposome made from micro-organism Escherichia coli, both of them are capable to deliver the entrapped antigen into the cytosol of the antigen-presenting cells (APCs). Subtilosomes is a class of special liposome which interacts with cells or cell membranes mainly by one or more processes, including physical adsorption, endocytosis, lipid exchange, and fusion, among which adsorption and endocytosis interactions are believed to be important mechanisms.

Features of Subtilosomes System

Though researches and applications of subtilosomes system are not so extensive, it is a novel potential carrier system in therapeutics with many properties.

  • Lipids in subtilosomes are derived from micro-organism B. subtilis
  • Better fusogenic properties
  • Non-toxicity, better biocompatibility, and completely biodegradable
  • Site-specific targeting and high penetration into tissues
  • Encapsulation structure enables better stability
