Epitope refers to the small site on an antigen to which a complementary antibody may specifically bind. This is usually one to six monosaccharides or five to eight amino acid residues on the surface of the antigen. Though the range of possible binding sites on a target molecule (antigen) is enormous, each potential binding site has its own structural properties derived from covalent bonds, ionic bonds, hydrophilic, and hydrophobic interactions. Generally, it is arduous and sometimes difficult to produce antibodies to target specific epitopes within a protein, especially when these epitopes are not effective antigens. Therefore, a novel strategy should be developed for anti-epitope antibodies discovery.
