AFU, which belongs to the lysosome acidic hydrolase group, is widely present in mammalian cells. AFU is associated with key aspects of the degradation of alpha-l-fucose. Consequently, the balance of alpha-l-fucose and AFU may affect the prognosis of malignancies. In fact, alpha fetoprotein (AFP) which is the golden marker for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) detection at early stage is of low sensitivity. Under normal conditions, AFU is continuously released into peripheral blood as a product of cell metabolism. Except for pregnant women, the serum AFU level of healthy individual is relatively low. Meanwhile, the serum AFU level of patients with hepatic carcinoma is increased because the AFU inhibitor generated by hepatocellular carcinoma reduces the hydrolysis capability for substrate, causing substrate accumulation and compensated increase in AFU level. Thus, AFU serum concentration can be a diagnosis index for primary hepatic carcinoma. Besides, AFU is also used as a tumor marker of several malignant tumors such as ESCC, squamous cell carcinomas, and preeclampsia.
