Background

The 252-kDa nucleoporin ELYS, encoded by AHCTF1 gene, is a large multifunctional protein with critical roles in nuclear pore assembly and mitosis. ELYS is one of 10 components of the large NUP 107-160 subunit of nuclear pore complexes (NPCs). These huge multi-subunit complexes form cylindrical channels in the nuclear envelope that regulate nucleocytoplasmic transport and intracellular localization of large molecules. ELYS is also indispensable for NPC reassembly after mitosis and carries out a broad range of activities during the cell cycle, such as mitotic spindle assembly, chromatin decompaction, and chromosome segregation.
