The A-kinase anchor proteins (AKAPs) are a group of structurally diverse proteins, which have the common function of binding to the regulatory subunit of protein kinase A (PKA) and confining the holoenzyme to discrete locations within the cell. AKAP11, also known as A-kinase anchor protein 11, is involved in the control of somatic and germ cell cycles by targeting and binding to protein kinase A. Scientists proposed that AKAP11-mediated cAMP/PKA activation via selective autophagy should be explored in the future as a therapeutic target for cancer treatment. Studies have also provided evidence the rs9533090 polymorphism in AKAP11 influences calcaneal quantitative ultrasound (QUS) parameters during youth.
