Angiopoietins are a family of secreted glycoproteins with important roles in vascular development and angiogenesis. Among them, angiopoietin 1 (ANGPT1) plays an essential role in embryogenic angiogenesis and in maintaining the integrity of adult vasculature. It functions as a constitutive Tie-2 receptor agonist. Both ANGPT1 and angiopoietin 2 (ANGPT2) are expressed in tumor cells, and they act cooperatively with VEGF promoting angiogenesis during tumor progression.
Studies also reported that ANGPT1 may be the earliest biomarker of potential diabetes-related renal disease progression and the plasma ANGPT1/ANGPT2 ratio is a potential diagnostic and prognostic biomarker for cervical cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Enrichment function analysis of ANGPT1 showed that ANGPT1 is an essential part of leukocyte migration, membrane regulation, epithelial cell proliferation, growth factor binding, PI3K-Akt signaling pathway, Ras signaling pathway, MAPK signaling pathway, Rap1 signaling pathway, cytokine-cytokine receptor interaction, and so on.
