EBV is the causative agent of infectious mononucleosis and is associated with several human lymphoid and epithelial malignancies including Burkitt's lymphoma, nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), T-cell lymphoma and Hodgkin's disease. EBV LMP-1, Epstein-Barr virus latent membrane protein 1,is an virus(EBV) protein that regulates its own expression and the expression of human genes. LMP1 is the best-documented oncoprotein of the EBV latent gene products, as it is expressed in most EBV-related human cancers. LMP1 can stimulate or inhibit signaling pathways, resulting in transformation of rodent fibroblast cell lines, blockade of differentiation in epithelial cells, upregulation of anti-apoptotic proteins, production of cytokines, upregulation of cell surface markers, upregulation of DNA methyltransferase activity, and downregulation of cell adhesion molecules and cyclin-dependent kinases.
