Lentiviruses are a subset of retroviruses, with the ability to intergrate into host chromosomes. Lentiviral vectors are excellent tools for delivery of genes into a wide range of cell types. Lentiviral particles transduce cells and integrate into the host genome in dividing and post-mitotic cells resulting in long-term expression of the transgene in vitro. Lentiviral particles are generated by co-transfection of the lentiviral expression vector with lentiviral packaging plasmids into e.g. HEK293 cells and harvesting of the virus-containing supernatant.
