Antigen Information
Introduction
Marburg Virus (MARV) is capable of infecting humans and non-human primates, causing viral hemorrhagic fever. The virus belongs to the family Filoviridae and has a very high mortality rate. It is listed as Risk Group 4 Pathogen by WHO, and is classified as Category A Priority Pathogen by NIH/National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also lists it as the Category A Bioterrorism Agent. MARV can be transmitted through body fluids. Once infected, the treatment is usually ineffective, but early professional symptomatic treatment will greatly improve survival. The MARV genome is linear, negative-sense, non-segmented single-stranded RNA encoding a total of seven structural proteins, including NP, VP35, VP40, GP, VP30, VP24 and L. Due to the potential for aerosol transmission, the virus has the possibility to be used as a biological weapon.
