FRα (Folate receptor-alpha)

Folate receptor-alpha (FRα), also known as FOLR1, FBP, FOLR, FR1, is a glycosylphosphatidyl-inositol-linked protein encoded by FOLR1 gene. This receptor is a membrane-bound protein with high affinity for binding and transporting physiologic levels of folate into cells. Compare to normal cells, FRα is overexpressed on ovarian and several other epithelial malignancies including renal cancer, lung cancer and breast cancer. Therefore, FRα can be used as a target for imaging and therapy.
