Six-reagent melanin and silver particle staining kit based on the reduction of silver nitrate to elemental silver. Melanin is a brown-black pigment usually found in the hair, skin, retina, iris, and certain parts of the central nervous system. Argentaffin particles are present in carcinoid tumors.

The Masson Fontana kit is used to validate a specific method of silver particles in tissue sections based on the reduction of silver nitrate to elemental silver. Melanin is a pigment usually found in certain parts of the skin, hair, retina, and central nervous system. To avoid false positive results, Creative Biolabs' Masson Fontana kits contain reagents for melanin destaining. Decolorization was performed on the control sections prior to silver impregnation.
