Background
Mature dendritic cells are immune cells that have undergone a process of maturation, during which they have acquired the ability to effectively present antigens to T cells and initiate an adaptive immune response. This process involves the upregulation of co-stimulatory molecules and antigen-presenting receptors, as well as the secretion of cytokines that promote T cell activation and differentiation. Mature dendritic cells are typically found in peripheral tissues, where they constantly sample their environment for foreign antigens. Once they encounter an antigen, they internalize it and process it into smaller peptides that can be displayed on their cell surface in complex with major histocompatibility complex molecules. This allows them to interact with T cells and initiate an immune response against the specific antigen. Mature dendritic cells play a critical role in the activation and regulation of both the innate and adaptive immune responses. They are considered to be the most potent antigen-presenting cells in the body and are essential for the initiation of immune responses against pathogens and tumor cells.
