Background
Alanine aminotransferase 1 (ALT1), also known as glutamate-pyruvate transaminase, is a cytosolic enzyme highly expressed in hepatocytes. It catalyzes transamination between alanine and α-ketoglutarate to generate pyruvate and glutamate. Because ALT is released during hepatocellular injury, its circulating level is widely used as a biomarker for liver damage and metabolic disorders.
Pathways
ALT functions in the alanine cycle, connecting amino acid metabolism in peripheral tissues with hepatic gluconeogenesis. The produced pyruvate feeds into the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle and gluconeogenic pathways, linking nitrogen metabolism with cellular energy production.
