Effector memory CD8+ T cells are a subset of memory T cells that have previously encountered and responded to a specific antigen. These T cells are characterized by their ability to quickly produce effector molecules such as cytokines and cytotoxic granules upon re-exposure to the same antigen. Effector memory CD8+ T cells play a crucial role in immune responses against pathogens and tumors, as they are able to provide rapid and effective protection against recurring threats.

Memory CD8+ T cells were originally thought to exist as two populations (effector and central memory). Effector memory CD8+ T cells lack expression of CCR7 and CD62L, displaying receptors that promote the migration back and from other tissues and have a better ability to readily produce cytokines. It reside in or circulate through peripheral tissues, such as the lung and skin, and have rapid and potent ex vivo cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) activity.
