Background
Plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDCs) are a specialized subset of dendritic cells that play a key role in the innate immune response to viral infections. pDCs are known for their ability to produce large amounts of type I interferons, such as interferon-alpha, in response to viral stimuli. This can help to activate other immune cells and enhance the antiviral immune response. pDCs also have the ability to stimulate adaptive immune responses by presenting antigens to T cells. They can also interact with B cells to promote antibody production and aid in the development of long-lasting immune memory. In addition to their role in viral defense, pDCs have been implicated in the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases, such as lupus and psoriasis. In these conditions, pDCs can produce excessive amounts of type I interferons, contributing to chronic inflammation and tissue damage
