Background
Lactate dehydrogenase C (LDHC) is a testis-specific isoform of the lactate dehydrogenase enzyme family. It plays a critical role in energy metabolism during spermatogenesis and sperm motility. Beyond reproductive physiology, LDHC has gained increasing attention as a cancer-testis antigen frequently expressed in certain tumors.
Pathways
LDHC participates in glycolytic metabolism by catalyzing the interconversion of pyruvate and lactate while regenerating NAD+ for continued glycolysis. This reaction supports high energy demands during spermatogenesis. In cancer cells, LDHC expression may contribute to metabolic adaptation and enhanced glycolytic activity associated with tumor progression.
