Description
NK cells are a type of lymphocyte that plays a critical role in the innate immune response. CD56 is a marker that is commonly used to identify NK cells, with the majority of NK cells expressing this marker. This cells mean that 90% of the NK cells express the CD56 protein on their surface. These CD56+ NK cells are known for their strong cytotoxic capabilities and ability to produce cytokines that help regulate the immune response. They are also important in controlling viral infections and detecting and eliminating cancerous cells.
Background
Natural killer (NK) cells are cytotoxic lymphocytes that function at the interface of innate and adaptive immunity. They are important effector lymphocytes of the innate immune system that play protective roles against both infectious pathogens and cancer. NK cells are also regulatory cells engaged in reciprocal interactions with dendritic cells, macrophages, T cells and endothelial cells.
