Antigen Information
Introduction
Corynebacterium Diphtheriae is the pathogenic bacterium that causes diphtheria. Corynebacterium Diphtheriae is a rod-shaped, Gram positive, non spore-forming, and nonmotile bacterium. It is classified into four biotypes according to their colony morphology: C. d. mitis, C. d. gravis, C. d. intermedius, and C. d. belfanti. Corrynebacterium diphteriae can produce diphtheria toxin, which inactivates the elongation factor EF-2 to alter protein function in the host. If untreated, the diphtheria toxin can get into the bloodstream causing damage to the kidneys, nerves, and heart. Extremely rare but serious complications include suffocation and partial paralysis.
