This gene encodes the mitochondrial form of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase, which catalyzes the GTP-dependent conversion of oxaloacetate to phosphoenolpyruvate. The cytosolic form, encoded by a different gene, is a major gluconeogenic enzyme in the liver. Several splice variants are known.
