| Description | GlycoErase™ SIGLEC5 knockout A549 cell line is a human lung epithelial cancer model lacking SIGLEC5 expression. SIGLEC5 belongs to the CD33-related Siglec subset and functions as a sialic acid-binding lectin with Ig-like structural domains. It is known to suppress the activation of monocytes, macrophages, and neutrophils, and also plays a role in immune evasion by group B Streptococcus (GBS). The knockout of SIGLEC5 in the A549 background offers a versatile system to investigate innate immune regulation, host-pathogen interactions, and bacterial immune escape mechanisms, while also serving as a platform for therapeutic development and functional immunology studies. |

| Target | SIGLEC5 |
| Full Name | Sialic Acid Binding Ig Like Lectin 5 |
| Alternative Name | CD170, OBBP2, CD33L2, OB-BP2, SIGLEC-5, Sialic Acid Binding Ig Like Lectin |
| Location | 19q13.41 |
| Gene ID | 8778 |
| Summary | This gene encodes a member of the sialic acid-binding immunoglobulin-like lectin (Siglec) family. These cell surface lectins are characterized by structural motifs in the immunoglobulin (Ig)-like domains and sialic acid recognition sites in the first Ig V set domain. The encoded protein is a member of the CD33-related subset of Siglecs and inhibits the activation of several cell types including monocytes, macrophages and neutrophils. Binding of group B Streptococcus (GBS) to the encoded protein plays a role in GBS immune evasion. |
