While Ins(1,4,5)P3 is the classic second messenger, Ins(1,5)P2 is a metabolite in the complex network of inositol phosphate signaling. It is typically generated through the hydrolysis of higher inositol phosphates (such as Ins(1,4,5)P3 and Ins(1,3,4,5)P4 by specific inositol polyphosphate phosphatases.
