Creative Biolabs now provides specialized preclinical research service using our overactive bladder activity (OAB) NHP models. Based on cutting-edge technology platforms as well as extensive expertise in NHP disease models, we guarantee our clients the most reliable and satisfactory service at a most competitive price.

What is overactive bladder activity (OAB)?

Overactive bladder activity (OAB) is a clinical diagnosis characterized by the symptom of urinary urgency. It is commonly accompanied by urinary frequency and nocturia, with or without urgency urinary incontinence. Overactive bladder can be caused by dysfunction of bladder nerves or muscles. In OAB, the detrusor tends to contract inappropriately regardless of how much urine is stored in the bladder, hence the term detrusor overactivity.

The advantages of non-human primates (NHPs) models

In recent years, a variety of animal disease models have been developed and widely utilized for studying the etiology, pathogenesis, natural history and potential treatments for human disorders, which greatly contribute to the understanding of human pathophysiology and drug development process. However, the information obtained from animal studies must be interpreted carefully due to the limitations of predictability. People have explored many animal species in the field of urological diseases, including hamsters, mice, rats, rabbits, cats, dogs, pigs, etc. So far, non-human primates (NHPs) represent the best option for remodeling the human condition since they share extensive similarities with humans in physiology, anatomy, behavior, organ mechanisms, and immunology.

OAB models provided by Creative Biolabs

Based on the predominant site of the deficit, animal models of OAB can generally be divided into peripheral and central models. Peripheral models are those resulting from direct damage to the bladder, i.e. peripheral innervation or blood supply; whereas central models are developed following injuries to the spinal cord, brain stem or higher centers. In Creative Biolabs, we can provide custom-oriented OAB NHP models, both peripheral and central, based on specific requirements. Comprehensive endpoint measurements/evaluation strategies include:

  • Voiding intervals on cystometrography
  • Functional bladder volume on cystometrography
  • Detrusor strip study
