Creative Biolabs provides eye irritation/corrosion test under GLP conditions either as stand-alone studies or as part of general toxicology programs for our global customers. With extensive experience in preclinical toxicity evaluation, our professional scientists will work strictly to promote our client's projects a success.

Eye Irritation/Corrosion

As defined by the GHS, eye irritation is the production of changes in the eye following the application of test substance to the anterior surface of the eye, which is fully reversible within 21 days of application. Whereas, eye corrosion is the production of tissue damage in the eye, or serious physical decay of vision, following application of a test substance to the anterior surface of the eye, which is not fully reversible within 21 days of application. Importantly, assessment of potential toxicity that causes eye injury is one of the integral components in the safety and toxicity evaluation of ocular drugs.

Introduction of Eye Irritation/Corrosion Test

In the past years, the Draize eye irritation test has been the preferred choice for ocular irritation/corrosion study. And New Zealand white rabbit is usually choosing as the best test strain for its large eyes, easiness to handle and relatively cheap price. However, the test method has been criticized due to a large variation in the test results and species-difference between human and rabbit. Therefore, a refined version of the Draize test, low-volume eye-irritation test (LVET) has been developed to reduce the suffering of animals from test chemicals in eye irritation. Furthermore, a variety of animal-free tests have been validated to promote the development of biomedical experimentation.

Eye Irritation/Corrosion Test Provided by Creative Biolabs

As a leading CRO with abundant experience in the world, Creative Biolabs is capable of offering both animal and animal-free eye irritation/corrosion tests for worldwide customers. For animal tests, 6 rabbits are needed at maximum, but it can be reduced to 3 when severe ocular damage occurs. What's more, the changes of cornea, conjunctiva, and iris in rabbit eyeball will be observed and recorded by our staff when a study is conducted. Whereas, for animal-free tests, our professional ophthalmology team can offer the following alternative methods:

  • Organotypic models
  • In-chemico assay
    Hemoglobin denaturation (HD) test
    Ocular irritection test
  • In silico models
  • Cell-based assay
    Cell function-based test
    Cytotoxicity based assay
Other cytotoxicity tests (Neutral red uptake assay)
  • Reconstructed human Cornea-like Epithelium (RhCE)
    HCE model
    Labcyte Cornea-Model
You may also be interested in other local toxicity studies:
  • Ear Irritation Test
  • Mucosa Irritation Test
  • Hemolysis Test (in vivo, in vitro)
