Di-N-Acetylchitobiose is a disaccharide made of two N-acetylglucosamine units joined by a β-1,4 linkage. This molecule is a fundamental building block of chitin, the second most abundant polysaccharide in nature. Because of its direct link to chitin, it is extensively used in research to understand how chitin is synthesized and broken down. It serves as an excellent substrate for studying the activity of chitinases, enzymes that degrade chitin. This research has applications in various fields, including developing antifungal and insecticidal agents, as well as in the food and biopharmaceutical industries.
