Liposomes are sphere-shaped vesicles composed of one or more phospholipid bilayers, which can accommodate hydrophilic and hydrophobic molecules in the cavity or the bilayer respectively. Due to the excellent biocompatibility and biodegradability provided by natural phospholipids and synthetic lipid components, liposomes are considered promising carriers for pharmaceutical, cosmetic and nutritional products. Scale-up Liposome Production

Liposomes and lipid-based nanomedicines are generally produced through a series of size reduction methods (e.g. homogenization or extrusion) being applied to large liposomes which are initially formed through a lipid hydration process. However, such methods are relatively complex when it comes to large-scale production and can lead to high costs. Microfluidics is a promising alternative for scale-up liposome preparation which possesses advantages including increased homogeneity, excellent repeatability, and large volumes (L) production.

Liposomal Bioactive Compounds

In addition to the pharmaceutical field, liposomes are also used in research on nutritional supplements and cosmetics. Creative Biolabs has developed various liposome formulations with natural phospholipids that can encapsulate bioactive compounds such as vitamins, CoQ10, ceramide, GSH, etc. The lipid bilayer structure of liposomes can improve the solubility and stability of bioactive compounds compared to non-liposomal materials. When given orally, liposomes can avoid gastric acid degradation and release the compounds at the intestinal tract to improve bioavailability. Dermal delivery of liposomes can penetrate the stratum corneum efficiently and release the bioactive molecules in the basal layer.
