Technologies for Glycan Profiling

There are numerous glycan profiling methods, such as mass spectrometry (MS), lectin-based histochemistry, high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), multiplex quantitative PCR (qPCR), multiple reaction monitoring mass spectrometry (MRM-MS), and tandem mass spectrometry. Recently, a novel biological method-lectin microarray has been gradually developed. Although there are many techniques for the analysis of protein glycosylation, there is no universal method for quickly and reliably identifying glycan structures. Each type of technology has its advantages, and the choice of technology depends on factors such as the type of glycosylation present and the nature and quantity of the sample. Therefore, scientists might choose the best method or combination of methods for glycan analysis based on the information they wish to know.

Among the various methods used for determination, each profiling methodology has certain advantages in detecting glycan. Several typical methods and their advantages are shown in the table below:
