Creative Biolabs has successfully developed rodent diabetic macular edema (DME) models with advanced technology. Our professional scientists will help you investigate your drug candidates and provide clinically relevant data for your project. We are happy to share our advanced technology and one-stop service for worldwide customers.

What is diabetic macular edema (DME)?

Diabetic macular edema (DME) is a characteristic feature of diabetic retinopathy (DR) which represents a spectrum of pathological changes occurring in the microvasculature of the eye in patients with diabetes. In patients with DME, fluid accumulates within the macular tissue layers as a consequence of the failure of the blood-retinal barrier and thus resulting in edema. Typically, DME can result in blurring and distortion of vision, which is reflected in a reduction in visual acuity (VA). However, the exact pathogenesis of DME is still unknown. Therefore, it is necessary to develop diabetic macular edema model to investigate the mechanism of DME.

Diabetic macular edema (DME) model provided by Creative Biolabs

In recent years, diabetic macular edema (DME) model which is induced by streptozotocin has been developed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of pharmaceuticals for DME or retinopathy. At Creative Biolabs, we use a standard diabetes induction protocol with streptozotocin to create this condition. Once the model is established, blood glucose levels and selected clinical chemistry parameters will be measured by our expert staff at least three times per week. Furthermore, all animals will be closely monitored by our staff veterinarians. Particularly, a series of evaluation of the eye will be conducted by our experienced scientists to ensure the successful establishment of DME model, including:

  • Fundus photography (color)
  • Fluorescein angiography
  • Optical coherence tomography (OCT)
  • Tissue excision and histopathological analysis
  • Bioanalysis of analyte concentrations in target tissues

As a pioneer company with advanced technology in rodent ocular disease models' development, Creative Biolabs also provides other models for global clients. If you are interested in the service we can offer, please click the links below.
