| Target/Description | NADPH, or nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate, is a crucial coenzyme found in all living cells, serving primarily as a vital reducing agent. It acts as an electron donor in numerous anabolic (biosynthetic) reactions, such as the synthesis of fatty acids, cholesterol, and nucleic acids, providing the necessary reducing power to build complex molecules. Beyond biosynthesis, NADPH plays a critical role in cellular defense mechanisms, particularly in protecting against oxidative stress by regenerating important antioxidants like glutathione. It also functions as a substrate for NADPH oxidases, which are enzymes that produce reactive oxygen species essential for immune responses, but can also contribute to cellular damage if overactive. The pentose phosphate pathway is the primary source of NADPH production in most organisms. |
