| Target/Description | Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) and its phosphorylated counterpart, nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADP+), are crucial cellular cofactors. NAD+ exists in an oxidized form and can be reduced to NADH, while NADP+ is formed by the addition of a phosphate group to the 2' position of the adenyl nucleotide of NAD+ via an ester linkage. NADP+ plays a vital role in anabolic processes like fatty acid and nucleic acid synthesis, where its reduced form, NADPH, acts as a reducing agent. Furthermore, in chloroplasts, NADP+ functions as an oxidizing agent in the initial stages of photosynthesis, with the resulting NADPH subsequently providing the reducing power for the biosynthetic reactions of the Calvin cycle. |
