Creative Biolabs has accumulated much experience in non-human primate (NHP) models and provides different kinds of NHP disease models involving multiple system diseases (please click here to find more information). Many clients all over the world have adopted our NHP disease models for their research and accomplished their preclinical non-GLP projects on our pharmacology and pharmacodynamics (PD/PK) platform. We are recognized as an optimal CRO company by our global clients.

What is HF?

HF refers to the failure of the systolic and/or diastolic dysfunction of the heart to fully discharge the venous return blood volume to the heart, leading to blood stasis in the venous system and insufficient blood perfusion in the arterial system. The symptoms include pulmonary congestion and vena cava congestion. HF is not an independent disease, but the final stage of the development of heart disease.

Preclinical Tools for HF Research

The purpose of establishing an animal model of HF is to simplify the extremely complicated syndrome into a research question that is easy to address. Compared with in vitro cell or organ models, animal models of HF can be used to analyze the physiological effects caused by cardiac dysfunction, which is crucial for studying the overall phenotype of HF. The present HF models are mainly established using rodents by surgery (e.g., aortic banding, coronary ligation, or cryoinjury), toxin (e.g., ethanol, doxorubicin, or homocysteine), or genetic manipulation.

Why We Need the NHP Model of HF?

Although rodents are cheap, small, and easy to handle, there are significant differences between the murine heart and the human heart. For example, the heartbeat of murine is much faster (400-600 beats per minute (bpm) compared with humans (60-90 bpm)). By contrast, NHPs are closer to humans in terms of anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, genetic background, etc. Thus, NHPs are generally considered the ideal animal species to establish the HF model.
