Salmonella is one of the most common causative agents of foodborne illness in human. In general, mild salmonellosis does not require treatment and recover in 2 weeks, while serious salmonellosis requires antimicrobial therapy. As a pioneer and undisputed global leader in the field of antimicrobial drug discovery, Creative Biolabs is proud to offer the most comprehensive and high-quality services for the discovery of anti-Salmonella drugs.

Introduction of Salmonella

Salmonella is a group of gram-negative, nonspore-forming rod-shaped bacteria that belongs to the family of Enterobacteriaceae. They are one of the most common causes of foodborne illness in human. Salmonella is resident in the intestinal tract of humans and animals and is excreted in feces. People get it by eating contaminated food of animal origin, mainly meat, poultry, eggs, and milk. Salmonella can be divided into two broad categories: typhoidal Salmonella and nontyphoidal Salmonella. In general, nontyphoidal serotypes can infect humans and a variety of animals, resulting in a self-limiting gastrointestinal disease that is characterized by some symptoms including diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. Typhoidal serotypes including S. Typhi and S. Paratyphi A strictly infect humans or higher primates, causing serious disease, typhoid fever.

Treatment for Salmonella Infection

In general, most people with mild salmonellosis recover without treatment. It is required to drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration. Serious salmonellosis, especially in cases when the bacteria enter the bloodstream, antimicrobial therapy is needed. Currently, the development of anti-Salmonella drugs is facing great challenges due to the emergence of strains of Salmonella with resistance to antimicrobial drugs. Lipopolysaccharide, flagellin proteins, and other outer membrane proteins of Salmonella have been proved as promising targets for the development of anti-Salmonella drugs. Besides, several antibacterial peptides, such as Cathelicidin-BF derived from the venom of the snake Bungarus fasciatus have been revealed to combat Salmonella infection.
