Introduction to Antimicrobial Peptide Discovery

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are a variety of molecules produced by different types of cells or tissues of various species. In general, AMPs can be divided into four main types, anionic peptides, linear cationic α-helical peptides, cationic peptides targeting specific amino acids, as well as anionic and cationic peptides that contain cysteine, based on the structure difference and the length of the amino acid sequence. Among them, the first type of peptides is a group of small molecules that usually exist in the airway epithelial cells and surfactant extracts. Previous studies have demonstrated that they can present active antimicrobial properties against Gram-negative bacteria. The second type of peptides is a series of short peptides (35-45 amino acid residues) without cysteine residues. Pilot studies have revealed that the high α-helical content of these peptides can dramatically improve the ability of antimicrobial activities against bacteria. The third type of peptides is a number of linearized peptides that are rich in several amino acids, such as arginine, proline, and tryptophan. the fourth type of peptides consists of cysteine residues needed to form a stable structure. In recent years, a diverse group of AMPs has been considered an effective source for discovering novel therapies for killing microorganisms in humans.

Our Services for Antimicrobial Peptide Discovery

AMPs have been broadly used for developing new antibiotics for treating a wide range of bacterial infectious diseases in humans. Currently, Creative Biolabs has generated a comprehensive antimicrobial peptide discovery platform to offer a panel of services for identifying novel AMPs based on Combinatorial Chemistry Methods and High-throughput Screening Assays. Notably, our services cover all the stages for antimicrobial peptide discovery, ranging from new antimicrobial peptide design and optimization, antimicrobial peptide screening, antimicrobial activity evaluation, to safety and toxicity assessment. In a recent study, we have successfully created safer and more effective broad-spectrum AMPs by using computer-assisted peptide design and combinatorial chemistry methods. These antimicrobial host-defense peptides have strong antimicrobial activity against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria and can resistant to protease degradation in the production.
